Watchmen [Season 1,] Episode 8: A God Walks into Abar by AverageMansReviews

5 things about this episode

Warning: there are flashing effects/other effects/transformation/shooting/white supremacy

Make mine a Manhattan: Storyline, Character [Character developments,] Art and Action these all combined in one way or another. Without giving too much away we meet this Police Officer Angela Abar drinking in the bar on the anniversary of her parents death, she gets approached by this man that offers to have dinner with her tomorrow, but she declines on more than one occasion in this meeting, but she wants to hear more of what this man has to say. We also find out how Adrian Veidt [a.k.a. Ozymandias] ends up on this Moon of Jupiter by the name of Europa, which has been touched by this man like god which we can clearly see can create great beauty or destroy things with very little effort as later on Detective Angela Abar have a fire fight [guns] with members of The Seventh Kavalry, but he assists her.

This episode receives: 10/10, this episode is lots of fun; it just has so much to offer that after everything is said and done this mark is well deserved.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe [Season 2,] Episode 121: The Magic Falls by AverageMansReviews

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe [Season 2,] Episode 121: The Magic Falls by AverageMansReviews

Review Time:

5 things about this episode

Warning: there is flashing effects/other effects/transformation

The Magic Falls: Storyline, Action, Character [Character developments] and Art; these combined in one way or another; between Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, they take Orko's magic. So it is up to him and Prince Adam or/and Prince Adam/He-Man to get them back. But for them to do this they need to go to this magical waterfall, but it is in a different dimension and the only one that roughly knows where it is would be The Guardian; a elderly entity which is very nice, but because he hasn't had anyone to talk to for many upon many years seems to be a little bit senile, so we have The Guardian transporting Attak Trak, Prince Adam/He-Man and Orko to these different dimensions until they find a one with this magic waterfall in. But I am much more interested in these scenes where Orko and Prince Adam/He-Man has been placed in this magical orbe [you cannot see through it; they are just protected in it]  so they travel from one-dimensional to the next with under the control/guidance of The Guardian on where they arrive at the next dimension they go back to a their normal selves, but whilst they are travelling from dimension to dimension; we have these fantastic scenes where roughly at the bottom there is this rainbow effect combining with this dark charcoal effect whilst on the top; there are these long to short cloud to fit in with this scene/sequence with this yellow/green sky with this orbe expanding when they get to the first dimensional; this is fantastic art.

This episode receives: 7/10, this episode is good; what we have here is a solidly good episode, but I had to award another mark based on these artistic elements that I have just described one example of.

Review Time

Warning: there is shooting/medical/chopping/hacking/beheading/shooting/stabbing/disfigurement. If you have or connected to anyone serving their country at this moment in time, nothing against this film, but maybe this film isn't for you right now.

This act of kindness has a incredibly high price to pay: this Navy Seal unit get sent in to Afghanistan to capture a Taliban local warlord by the name of Ahmad Shah, but this mission gets compromised when this unit gets discovered by these Taliban civilians [if I upset anyone here, I am just trying to walk the political tightrope here, so I quickly and obviously apologise for any hurt I have caused here.] These three people are basically shepherds herding their goats, so they capture them and then discuss what they are going to do with them, so after a lengthy discussion Lieutenant Michael P. "Murph" Murphy [Taylor Kitsch] takes control of the situation and lays down what is going to happen involving letting them go and aborting this compromised mission calling for an evacuation, but things so didn't go down this way.

The pacing for this 121 minutes film is good, it knows what it is doing and it smoothly and efficiently gets on with it. Now just based on this film, it shows the Taliban people of all kinds be it civilian or not to be nothing but savages or seemed to revel in war as this one individual can't wait to get back home to inform the necessary people that these US Navy Seals are here, if it seems like I am being somewhat harsh by your opinions, let me just point out that these US Navy Seals did discuss shooting them, but as Hospital corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell [Mark Wahlberg] I am paraphrasing here there rules of engagement in a nutshell say no shooting civilians.

But when the shoe is on the other foot; I am going to put this as nicely as I can when  Sonar technician Second Class Matthew "Axe" Axelson [Ben Foster] reached the end of his life, he was in very bad shape going to die and defenceless so this Taliban soldier shot him dead, he missed with his first short and nearby close range, but didn't miss with the second, this was not a mercy killing this was clearly shooting somebody for the hell of it and as I have already pointed out he was defenceless so it wasn't like this soldier had a militarily reason to shoot him. I would have left him in the sun and against this tree to enjoy the very limited time he had left so what I am suggesting is all this soldier had to do was get up and turn around and walk the hell away.

Obviously this is not a comedy, but there are some small moments of comedy such as this Afghanistanin child learning the difference between a duck and a knife when it really matters this.

The character developments and the performances are all good, this is where I feel it is important to point this out; this code of honour used by the Afghanistanin; Pashtunwali is a way of life and code of honour requires a tribe protect an individual from his enemies at any cost, this is just a brief outline there is more at the very closing stages of this title. I was just thinking I would put this in for balance so it cannot be deemed or be seen as a racist, because I have spoken about the evil that Taliban do, but I am also highlighted what the Afghanistanin people can do what so.

This film receives: 6/10, this film is good; it tells a tragic story with smooth movement throughout; so not surprising this film has 6 winners awards to its name; for two examples Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards 2014; Critics Choice Award; Best Action Movie [at the same event/award ceremony] Best Actor in an Action Movie Mark Wahlberg. 16 nominations for two examples; not one but two Academy Award 2014 Oscars; the first is; Best Achievement in Sound Mixing Andy Koyama Beau Borders David Brownlow and the second is; Best Achievement in Sound Editing Wylie Stateman.

Average Extra of: How come there isn't more of an outrage towards Jada Pinkett Smith by AverageMansReviews

Average Extra of: How come there isn't more of an outrage towards Jada Pinkett Smith by AverageMansReviews

Real Talking Time:

Warning/Disclaimer: this is a courtesy warning I will most probably trigger someone out there with what I am about to say or at some point in this blog so take this the warning. Disclaimer I am not a psychological or medical expert, so my opinions are based on life experience and what I see in this situation.

So briefly if you want to get up-to-date press on this link Average Extra of: Will Smith strikes Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards 2022 https://averagemansreviews2017.blogspot.com/2022/03/average-extra-of-will-smith-strikes.html

Like it or not this is how I see things; now on research for this blog for out the past week or so [because I have to work on other content] I have seen such manure circling this toxic relationship after this incident such as from Jada Pinkett Smith putting on her Instagram " This is a season for healing and I'm here for that." What utter garbage, so your husband pretty much ruins the best night of his career ever, he strikes one of his longest friends on a massive public stage [because you indicated you didn't find his joke funny, but then after Will striking him you found this funny, but because of this incident, it financially worked out all right for Chris Rock as his latest tour tickets sold have gone up by at least 48%, I must stress this would be old data/information so it is more than likely higher than this,] the police get called to your home because of a drone sighting, he resigns from The Academy Awards, his career takes a hit as film projects get put on hold, The Academy Awards ban him for 10 years because of this incident [which is a pointless and trivial punishment considering Will has already resigned. I mean the only suitable punishment was to take his Oscar away from him.] You belittle your husband in a video where he clearly doesn't want you to record him and you make reference to potentially/speculation on my part may be a councillor coming to sort the situation out in this video and Will checks himself into a rehab facility [speculation on my part again, but just for a break most probably, which I couldn't blame him.]

So have I got everything in almost the right order here Jada? [I know some of these situations happened after this statement on her Instagram post.] But however it still makes a good point. Where she hasn't lost anything of great significance, because Will Smith is financially the big fish/big star here and now I am not speaking from a chauvinist prospective, yes Jade has been in three out of the four Matrix Films and done other projects/TV and has her own alternative music band, but the fact remains that Will Smith has been a mainstayer in popular culture for the vast majority of his life/career be it TV, film or music.

Unfortunately we come to the big point I want to make and I know full well some people out there are going to hate this point; yes Will Smith needs to take responsibility for what he has done, but I don't like it how people generally speaking are taking it so easy on Jade when it is clearly domestic abuse from her to him by the name of coercive behaviour which on reflection would explain this public outburst from Will Smith in this incident and after with his award speech. Now yes I will repeat myself I am not a psychological or medical expert, but I have some experiences with psychological abuse from women and being in a relatively short coercive behaviour relationship myself [which because of my mental health and the situation at the time, I couldn't see it because I was relatively new into having mental health issues anyway but to realise many, many years later what this individual was doing,] so I recognise when I see it when I dictated/wrote the previous connecting blog to this one, I was unaware of their relationship dynamic to this level, I mean I knew she had the pants on in this relationship which works for some relationships which isn't coercive behaviour it is just how some people's relationships work, but in this case it is clearly coercive behaviour on some levels.

The uncomfortable truth is if it was Will behaving in this coercive behaviour towards Jada the outrage would be merciless and the Cancel culture would not stop until they had achieved their aim to ruin Will. So I say this in a comparison perspective why is it okay for a woman to be like this and yes she may receive some backlash, but if the shoe was on the other foot Will wouldn't have a leg to stand on? I mean this is why men struggle to come forward on any form of abuse I mean based on my personal experience be it anywhere real-life or the computer landscape even when I try to stand up for myself, we have painted a culture where they can flip on the weak female role routine or they believe I have no right to talk to them like that because they are a woman and I will finish it on this line it is 2022, if you want equality which is fair enough but it also comes with strings attached meaning if you want to be seen or treated as the same, you cannot get away with things that other people in this case men cannot do.[Just to cover back I am not condoning any domestic violence regardless of the combination or type of the relationship in question.]

The Dark Knight Rises 2012 by AverageMansReviews

Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful effects/shooting/medical/torture/kamikaze/suicide/disfigurement/stabbing/breaking

8 years have passed since we and the people of Gotham have seen Batman: being Batman or connected to Batman or doing the best for Gotham City has taken its toll in some way or ways on Bruce Wayne/Batman [Christian Bale,] Alfred Pennyworth [Michael Caine] and Commissioner Jim Gordon [Gary Oldman.] But from over the horizon The League of Shadows has a new face as their leader by the name of Bain [Tom Hardy,] but someone is responsible for allowing him to be unleashed on to Gotham. Bruce Wayne/Batman has an unpredictable and not to be trusted cat in his corner Selina Kyle/Catwoman [Anne Hathaway,] an GCPD Officer/Detective John Blake [Joseph Gordon-Levitt] and Lucius Fox [Morgan Freeman] the CEO and vice President of Wayne Enterprises which is trying to keep this empire up and going and away from the hands of John Daggett [Ben Mendelsohn] and if that wasn't enough we have Dr. Jonathan Crane a.k.a. Scarecrow [Cillian Murphy] passing judgements; yes if you are keeping score that would mean this character/performer appears throughout this trilogy in all three films in some part, so on a quick side note if you enter any quizzes and if it should happen that you have a question like this; name the four characters that are in The Dark Knight trilogy? They would be Bruce Wayne/Batman, Alfred Pennyworth, Lucius Fox and we have Dr. Jonathan Crane/a.k.a. Scarecrow, I have written it this way because for those fussy people that say Scarecrow does not appear in this film [visually as Scarecrow] this would be technically correct.

The pacing for this 165 minutes film is excellent, because as you can see from the length of this film it would quite clearly suggest that there is a lot of things to get a through and it just smoothly gets through its content with gear changes to it, depending on what is appropriate for that time, be it slow or you know consistently moving with a dialogue exchanges giving them time to breathe and concentrate on the point it is at that time. For an example in short Alfred Pennyworth tells Bruce Wayne the truth about the letter from Rachel Dawes and he can't do this anymore or these lengthy action sequences which are high octane action, be it when Bruce Wayne/Batman makes his return known on his Batbike where at some point in this sequence he shoots at this lorry car transport [where you have these cars on the back of this lorry in sets of two ramps one at the bottom and one on the top,] he does this because he is trapped and needs a way out so he shoots to release these ramps and use of them to escape by jumping on/on his bike to continue the chasing sequence, this is imaginative and at the end of this sequence they think they have them trapped, but without giving too much away they so don't, so not once but twice Bruce Wayne/Batman escapes with comical tone or elements by actions or dialogue exchanges. The artistic vision and tones of this film are beautifully spot on as they put across what it is like to live in Gotham and the fact that things have slightly changed for the better, but you still get the feeling of the downtrodden and decaying elements of this city including in my next example of when things just get darker in tone [but I should quickly point out we do get some eye-catching colourful sequences as well such as Heinz Field the home of the NFL team the Pittsburgh Steelers and this sequence/scenery where Bruce Wayne/Batman is on his final task.]

Bain vs. Bruce Wayne/Batman these action sequences on the other hand are very much still excellent and all of that, but they are done in such a more darker tone as Alfred Pennyworth tries to warn Bruce Wayne [this is way before he couldn't do this any more] that he is essentially a killing machine and Bain proves this against anyone that stands in his way or fulfils their purpose consequently has no need for them or they irritate him. But back to these specific action sequences with Bain vs. Bruce Wayne/Batman; Bain just pounds Bruce Wayne/Batman into the ground and whatever Bruce Wayne/Batman does Bain has an answer for it with more and more brutality. In fact they got nominated an award for one particular sequence; MTV Movie + TV Awards 2013; MTV Movie Award; Best Fight Christian Bale Tom Hardy Bale and Hardy face off as Batman and masked menace Bane, brawling beneath Gotham City's underbelly in a sewage smack-down marking the end of a trilogy.

The character developments and the performances are once again of a cast performance of the most highest standard; the toll as I have already mentioned in the opening section of this review on these three characters/performers is something you can see and feel as you can see individually this weight of this responsibility/burden is heavily weighing on them. The newcomers into this trilogy just gel/sloted right in as if they already knew what was required and expected of them and they just brought it. For two examples; Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA 2013; won Saturn Award; Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway [at the same event/ceremony] nominee Best Supporting Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

This film receives: 10/10, this film is top-notch entertainment; this sets the benchmark for what standard a Batman film needs to be like; yes absolutely it can be different interpretations and so on and so forth that Christopher Nolan, Jonathan Nolan [brothers] and David S. Goyer [story for this trilogy] were instrumental in bringing this trilogy to life be it director, screenplay for Christopher or Jonathan screenplay [he didn't work on Batman begins 2005.] This film was also nominated for a BAFTA; BAFTA Awards 2013; BAFTA Film Award; Best Special Visual Effects Paul J. Franklin Chris Corbould Pete Bebb Andrew Lockley; this film has accredited to its name 39 awards won and 103 nominated for, but I hasten to add not to discredit these figures, but just to cover my back just in case someone comes back to me in compliance; some of these awards are connected to other films that may or may not be in this trilogy.

The Matrix Resurrections 2021 by AverageMansReviews

The Matrix Resurrections 2021 by AverageMansReviews

Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful effects/shooting/drugs/rebirth/medical/disfigurement/transformation/suicide

Why was this film ever green lighted to go into production?: This is where I would usually discuss or tell you a bit about the storyline, but in this particular case, I would just say this; Thomas Anderson/Neo [Keanu Reeves] gets brought out of The Matrix again, then to remember his life is a lie and to remember who he actually is again to free Tiffany/Trinity [Carrie-Anne Moss] from The Matrix and from The Analyst [Neil Patrick Harris.]

I don't know what they expect me to say about this film really; other than what a pile of manure this sequel is. Let's be positive for two minutes I can completely understand why this project has some awards accredited to its name for an example BAFTA Awards 2022 Nominee; BAFTA Film Award; Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects Tom Debenham Huw J. Evans Dan Glass J.D. Schwalm. Because this film does look and feel artistically and cosmetically a treat for the eyes and very satisfying, be it the landscapes or the scenery or pretty much anything other [I have said pretty much everything other, because in a little while I will be also criticising it, but the old cinema screen or a familiar scene with an old TV and so on in this scene; this is all very pleasing.]

The character developments and performances; well I get the character developments; on one hand they are good as in they serve their purpose but on the other hand they are insufferable as it relates to Thomas Anderson/Neo, likewise later on I will be discussing this as well, the only newcomer that from beginning to end that I can say is this individual character and performer stood out as she could easily gel with the old guard back in the day of this trilogy would be Bugs [Jessica Henwick] this character/performer is a captain of this ship known as The Mnemosyne, in fact she wins an award for this performance. Gold List 2022; Honorable Mention; Best Supporting Actress, we get a small piece of comedy as this recurring character The Merovingian [Lambert Wilson] as he goes on a rant about things and how they used to be, whilst this action sequence is taking place. Speaking of the action sequences for me they are hit and miss; Thomas Anderson/Neo vs. Morpheus - in a nutshell; firstly an Agent Smith and then Morpheus [Yahya Abdul-Mateen II] in this slightly familiar location of this Dojo program/training. This training program has had a massive update since we had last been here as you will see when you come to watch this film and as a quick mention yes the chopper sequence is good as well with Thomas Anderson and Trinity.

Now I think I have been kind enough about this film; the storyline is garbage it is designed for a nostalgia pop, this film goes on for roughly 148 minutes which is just too long, considering for the first 60 minutes; yes I did just say 60 minutes; one long hour, nothing really happens it just rambles on and on and on and on and on [I think you get the point] as it uses many scenes from previous films, as I have already highlighted yes this was good as it relates to the TV scene/sequence and on top of that I get why they are a using them for Thomas Anderson/Neo's character developments, but man after a while it really does suck either as his character developments or Tiffany/Trinity's character developments, it has just come back to me, they did this memory thing for the main returning characters, be it memory from scenes in this film or anything else, basically they take this good idea with  this TV scene/sequence and before this and after this scene they were beginning running dry or ran a dry.

The pacing for this film with or without the first hour in mind it is just terrible, it never seems to convincingly go with any fluency, like there may be a little bit here and a little bit there; but in essence it is a mini [car] going up a hill in third gear in snow; it will get you to your destination at the top of the hill to work eventually, but I wouldn't book any appointments for the first 90 minutes of work. Which no surprise anyway in turn makes this film feel incredibly long [ I know this film is a long film, but even more so] as these characters/performances left to basically fill up this empty space in these scenes. I am not aiming this at the characters or the performers, but as the person said with whom I watched this film with said " they could have easily taken out the first hour of this film and make it into a 90 minute film." I would have to agree, I had already got fed up and annoyed with this film after the first 25 minutes and they have potentially left it open for a sequel, which on some research as things stand in 2022 there isn't going to be one, but things could change based on the ending style of this film. Which I hope they don't make a sequel, actually I wish this film hadn't been made, because it really does tarnish the legacy of this franchise that is how bad this film is.

This film receives: 1/10, this film is poor; this is one of those occasions where I freely acknowledge that there is some positives to this film, but the negatives especially in this case really counterbalance any positives that this film has And just a polite heads up there is one after credit scene. This film has won 2 awards and nominated for 33; including somehow [no judgement or criticism here but I am just wondering how this is possible] Hawaii Film Critics Society 2022; HFCS Award Best Sci-Fi Film; positive award [at the same award event/ceremony] Worst Film of the Year; negative award. Now I get the theory and logic behind this, but isn't or wasn't there a better choice of sci-fi film? It just seems a little bit odd to be given a positive and negative awards such as these at the same event/ceremony.
