This
is a one-man film: briefly; this family
meet this other family on holiday in Italy; they get on so well that the father
of this one family Paddy [James McAvoy:] a retired doctor; invites this other
family; father Ben Dalton [Scott McNairy:] well be it personally or
professionally his life isn't going to well to all meet up again at their part
of the UK with both families; they accept.
Generally
speaking: the framework and pacing up this
110 minutes film is for the majority of the time consistently moving, until
roughly approaching slightly more of the final quarter of proceedings then it
has a get up and go to it.
Action and comedy; there is only one action sequence
that grabbed my attention, based on it is setting a vehicle on fire; coinciding
with the comedy; being Paddy's reaction to this which under no circumstances
can I say or censor.
Character developments and performances; on both counts
for the vast majority they are good on both counts; you know safe and reliable
character developments and the performances reflect that. Now we can come on
to; McAvoy; he does put him on of those performances that he is fully capable
of producing with ease and comfort; as Paddy is more than intelligent to scale
back his level of crazy when it is appropriate or time to do so, but is still
able to put across by his body language and facial intensity that something
quite isn't right with this guy. But if you're a fan of McAvoy and you are
expecting something like him from Split 2016 where without giving too much
away, but enough to make my point; he is multiple characters, I mean we get a
pinch of something like that, but in this case it ranges from civilised to
crazy and back again. In this film he also doesn't have anyone to push against
either be it another character/performer or indeed himself.
This
film receives: 5/10, this film is mixed; I am
pretty sure I have subtly indicated this already; but just in case I haven't;
McAvoy makes this film, without him this film would have really struggled, so
if you are a fan of McAvoy; check this film out.
