In 1890's London: briefly; we have these once good friends now turned
bitter rivals Robert Angier/other names
[Hugh Jackman:] he is an magician that is one of the best at this time, he is
suffering the loss of his wife, due to the involvement of Alfred/other
names/other character [Christian Bale:] he is the other best magician of these
times; so their focus on either working out how the other one is doing this
piece of magic or/and trying to outdo one another.
Generally speaking: the script, framework and pacing of this 130 minutes
film; well... even though I get its purpose. Because we're dealing with magic
in this title; the framework and pacing of this film is perfectly designed to
in essence misdirect its viewers, in the sense of someone trying to use
misdirection as it relates to a card trick or something to that effect, but I
don't have to like it and I really didn't like it, as it was really slow and
really quite waffly and because of that it made reading the script, before
something went down, incredibly easy based on, I could not once but twice read
this situation before something went down and it was obvious.
Art
and action; don't get me wrong; this project cosmetically such as the set
designs, wardrobe and so on and so forth; looks easily transported as the
viewers can just walk back in time to this period as everything looks authentic
and the mechanics of the tricks minus the animal cruelty is good fun.
Character
developments and performances; I do understand the friction/chemistry between
our lead partnership of Jackman and Bale and their characters; but
unfortunately we didn't get to that point in this film where things do get
really immature and consequently tiresome; so, so tiresome; to the point where
without giving too much away; we get the big reveal and to be brutally honest I
couldn't care less, but if we were to put all this to one side for minute, I
think it would be a fair assessment to say that the performances of this cast
are all good; but I can't stress enough how much these character developments
bored me in one way or another.
This film receives: 5/10, this film is mixed; how can I sell this film to
you? It looks fantastic and highly creative with the tricks and this cast has
many well-known names such as Jackman or/and Bale and a few others. But with
the mixture of the framework and pacing and the character developments being
what they are this film finds itself in this bracket of my marking system. This
film also has many awards accredited to its name; 6 Winners which includes but
not limited to SFX Awards, UK 2007 SFX Award Best Film Director Christopher
Nolan and Italian Online Movie Awards (IOMA) 2007 IOMA Best Adapted Screenplay
(Miglior sceneggiatura non originale) Christopher Nolan Jonathan Nolan. 44
Nominees that includes but not limited to Academy Awards, USA 2007 Oscar Best
Achievement in Cinematography Wally Pfister and from the same award
ceremony/event Best Achievement in Art Direction Nathan Crowley (art
director)Julie Ochipinti (set decorator)
