Review Time

Warning: there is a component of racism/component of mental health and medical/references to racism [yes even though I know they are all the same ethnic background]

In late 1950s: we meet the Maxson family; husband-and-wife Troy and Rose Lee/Rose [Director of this film: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis:] he is a trash collector; hard-working, but drunk and bitter man about life in general such as could have been a professional baseball player; they have children and this is their life.

Generally speaking: the storyline/script is for the vast majority of this movie situated around the house; which is a massive positive as in this location we get a good sense of the social order of things, but if you come from this decade or/and the nearby subsequent decades for an example me coming from the 1980s even though this family is African-American and from an African American neighbourhood as well, regardless of skin colour in this case if you come from this anything like this environment you may not want to remember it so it can be a difficult watch; the framework and pacing of the 139 minutes is by and large good, but and I will take marks off for having a massive time jump towards the end of the movie of a rough estimation of roughly 6 years and 6 months [if you listen to some of the dialogue exchanges it would indicate that my guess here is a reasonable assessment.]

Art and character developments; the house design, wardrobe and accessories create a atmosphere of a very blue collar family environment with Troy that goes out to work... works long hours and every Friday without fail gives his wages to his wife minus a little bit for drink and if he get any money back from Rose, he does the heavy duty tasks anything to do with in or outside the house meanwhile Rose runs the house, she feeds anyone and anything other to keep things running.

Character developments and performances; on both counts for a high percentage of the cast they are all good and likewise they create good chemistry, but let's be completely honest with one another; it is the character developments, chemistry, and performances and everything else of Washington and/or Davis that makes this film in its entirety; he is a man of these times, whilst she is a very strong woman of these times as well and consequently they know their roles within this dynamic, but if one or the other chooses to screw that up for whatever reason; this relationship is an investment and/or it is their job; I don't really need to say this to the older generation, but for the younger generations; this is by and large what a real relationship/marriage looks like; hard work, investment and a willingness to stick to it especially through rocky times; in summary; a relationship/marriage is not always pretty and the sooner you realise that the more fulfilling life you will have, but back to this movie individually or together these two performers are the driving force behind this film that is for sure.

This film receives: 7/10, this film is good; after everything is said and done this film does have two very powerful performances in this husband-and-wife as I have already referenced; it is also a very clean and tidy and well presented product; it just isn't an easy watch and like I have already said I don't like the time jump of roughly 6 years and 6 months give or take. This film has quite a lot of awards accredited to its name such as 60 Winners which includes but not limited to Academy Awards, USA 2017 Oscar Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Viola Davis, 123 Nominees would also include but not limited to; back to this award ceremony/event Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role Denzel Washington [in total it has 3 Oscar Nominations.]
