Well that was that then: Moana [Youngest: Emma Puahi-Shapazian/Young: Amaya Masoli/Older:
Catherine Laga'aia:] she is a Princess of Motunui, she has been chosen by the
Sea to undertake this task against her father's wishes which involves Maui
[Dwayne Johnson:] a demigod of the Wind and Sea that it has been foretold he is
not a nice individual, he communicates with one of his many tattoos, he knows a
very powerful weapon at his disposal; it is a Manaiakalani [fish hook] that
gives him the ability to be a shape-shifter; this is her/their quest to
hopefully save her island.
Generally speaking: well as this is a live action remake of the animated 2016 version,
the storyline/script is what you expect and consequently the exposition
character developments: storyteller voice over by: Gramma Tala [Rena Owen:] she
is grandma to Moana; a wise old lady, that is spirited and kind, but also can
come off as slightly ever so slightly eccentric and enthusiastic about life.
The framework and pacing of this 115 minutes film; these are not the problems
it is at least 85% the rest of this project that is the problem.
Art and
action; for the vast majority of this project will in one way or another yikes
it is just ugly so much so when I first experienced the first moment of how
ugly this film really is actually said yikes that is ugly and took a massive
breath in my teeth. Briefly or as brief as I can be, because I don't want to
waste your time; anything predominantly natural such as landscapes or dancing
or predominantly just blue or much later on green these are by and far
positives/assets to this live-action train wreck [and that is me doing things
nicely.]
But now onto
everything else I really want to know how the hell did they think that this
project was remotely anywhere near up to scratch by 2026 standards, because
it's so isn't: the green screen-effects are a dismal at every stage throughout
this film, be it in the musical numbers or/and in the action sequences, there
are some very small moments where the art is good; then again they just flood
this scene with too much computer-generated or/and too much going on, so you
can easily see where everything is separated; be it for an example in the
musical number "You're Welcome" performed by Maui/Johnson where this
number were very beginning looks very good, but then I quickly changed my mind
when it doesn't look natural and you can see and more importantly feel this
musical number just fall apart in its very unauthenticated presentation yes
Johnson and still sing; but he may as well be a skit in reference to the
Titanic; from the aspect of the ship was going down around him and eventually
Moana/Laga'aia let's just keep going and hope no one notices.
Moana
escaping this cave is a good sequence of events, but there is much bigger
point; it is so much more authentic and consequently real then her swing
through the air [with us the viewers behind her with some weak attempt to make
this a more immersive experience for the audience; because the green-screen
effects again are beyond a joke actually they are a complete disaster and this
is why I have been selective in my choices, because all the rest minus this
character giving a new fish hook, really doesn't interest me in the slightest.
Character
developments, performances, voice performance and comedy; the surrounding
characters, performances and voice performance; on both counts they are good
versions of what they are meant to be and their performances/including voice
performance reflects that, there is one that stood out head and shoulders above
the rest and that would be; Rena Owen as Gramma Tala; she seemingly seems to be
the one that read and understood what was needed to bring this character to
life and hopefully some positive award given would see this performance and go;
she deserves at minimum a positive nomination from us at least.
Now we come
to Moana/Laga'aia and/or Maui/Johnson; other than the green-screen effects,
joined the first on the list of problems that this film has would be these two
in any capacity whatsoever; individually or together their performances feel as
if they are struggling or/and feels really forced; there is no cohesion; I mean
at worst things feel and look really hollow and empty and their best they are
just going through the motions; I mean simply put; when Maui's tattoo of
himself/little Maui has more personality and enthusiasm than two grown-up
people then you know that there is a problem and for the comedy minus little
Maui in anything he does including because of Maui that is good-natured fun,
but the rest is a cheap imitation of their animated 2016 version, so obviously
that would be boring.
This film receives: 3/10, this film is poor; yes this film does have some positive bits
and pieces, but then again the counter balance is so s heavy that I couldn't
justify or I really did struggle to justify anything higher even though Owen's
performance is basically a diamond covered in soil and more often than not I
would give an extra mark for this, but this is one of those occasions where I
just can't do it, nothing against her, it is just a need to work out a mark
that shows a real reflection of what this film is in this case.
I will have
to do another piece of content on this film; because I don't want to make it too
big and they are clearly issues here that need to be discussed in one way or
another, but for now; all I can say is; if you have small children you may want
to take them to go and see this film, but other than that; you may want to go
and watch paint dry for roughly 2 hours and yes I will be putting the resulting
content down at the bottom of this content.
