We
followed them for the next 4 years:
briefly; we the audience see these auditions to get into this High School of
the Performing Arts; such as one example one individual by the name of Doris
Finsecker [Maureen Teefy:] she is very timid, but she gets in: on their drama
course.
Generally
speaking: the framework and pacing of this
133 minutes film is good, the project gets broken down into sections like
Auditions, Freshman Year and so on and on top of that we have art from the
perspective of performing some kind of art at some point in this film; be it
singing, playing instruments or/and dancing and to a certain extent you can
include comedy from the perspective of it being a stand-up comedian [it is
still a performing art.]
Character developments and performances; on both counts
these components including the arts of different backgrounds obviously do so
much for this film; it is complex but also very natural from the perspective of
these characters/people come from different backgrounds and different cultural
environments, whilst simultaneously having this coming-of-age which clearly has
its own complexities as well as they are discovering who they want to become or
who they are turning into and the best example of this is well for a quick
example to make my point; would be Ralph Garci/Raul Garcia [Barry Miller:] he
gets onto the drama course, but some point he also discovers that he has a
talent for being a stand-up comedian and I feel comfortable saying this,
because I have seen plenty of stand-up comedians throughout my life and I am
sure they would agree with me, that it is excellent when you have all your
friends and/or people onside in the room with you, but it is how you get
through/over those nights where you are dying on stage, in fact you just want
the stage to open up and swallow you and this is what our young inspiring
comedian will have to learn as well.
This
film receives: 7/10, this film is good; even
though I have rated this film a bit low considering what I'm about to say next;
it is well worth it once in a lifetime, but to balance up now I have seen it;
it doesn't have much of a repeating viewing factor about it, yet it did
incredibly well as it relates to awards; 9 Winners which include but not
limited to; Academy Awards, USA 1981 Oscars Best Music, Original Song Michael
Gore (music) Dean Pitchford (lyrics) For the song "Fame" and Oscar Best Music, Original Score Michael
Gore. 16 Nominees which also includes but not limited to; back to this
event/ceremony Best Film Editing Gerry Hambling and Best Music, Original Song
Michael Gore (music) Lesley Gore (lyrics) For the song "Out Here on My
Own" [there are in total 4 Oscar Nominees.]
