Hocus Pocus 1993 by AverageMansReviews
Review Time
Warning:
there is flashing effects/colourful effects/capital
punishment/burning/transformation/cutting/dismemberment/biting/regeneration/animal
cruelty/I have to admit there is a weird sexual undertone, I know it was a
different time in the 1990's, I lived through it once.
We
have until the candle burns out:
basically; we have these three sisters; the Sanderson sisters; Winifred
Sanderson [Bette Midler:] clearly the brains of the three, Mary Sanderson
[Kathy Najimy:] she has the ability to sniff out children and tell roughly all
about them [Weird] and then we have Sarah Anderson [Sarah Jessica Parker:] the
typical blonde personality traits that knows of her sexual appeal. But Winifred
can't remember this spell too well would is in her spell book which has been
taken from her and without it they can't suck the souls of children and yes
before I forget the person that released them had to be a virgin and they make
reference to this at some points in this film; like I said it is all a bit
weird.
Generally
speaking: the framework and pacing of this
96 minute film is straightforward, but there is about 15 minutes where without
giving it away, but I have to make my point; where you think the sisters are
gone, but they aren't; around this part of the film; this project seems to lose
its self for a little while, but then again it finds itself.
Art; the set designs, costumes and all of that is good;
you know it may look a little bit cheesy by today's standards, but you know
there has been effort to bring this landscape to life in one way or another.
Comedy and action; at this moment in time Mary hasn't
got a broomstick to fly on, so she uses a vacuum cleaner [this really does feel
like one of those occasions where I should point out; I am just pointing out
what is in this project and nothing more.]
Character developments, performances and voice
performance; on all counts they are either solid and reliable character
developments or/and mostly solid performances, but a special mention has to go
out to; Danielle "Dani" Dennison [Thora Birch:] she is is an
eight-year-old girl and to begin with all she wanted to was go trick or
treating chaperoned by her older brother. But her performance as this young
trick or treater is very good, as she for most of the time has something
interesting or/and engagable to say.
This
film receives: 5/10, this film is mixed; after
everything is said and done this film title find itself in this section of my
marking system, I mean if you haven't seen this film before or/and you haven't
seen it for many years or/and decades, maybe watch it and there is an extra
sequence through the first Lord of ending credits. But I had the opportunity to
see this film in the cinema on its 30th anniversary. This film has some awards
accredited to it such as 2 Winners that includes Academy of Science Fiction,
Fantasy & Horror Films, USA 1994 Saturn Award Saturn Award Best Costumes
Mary E. Vogt 11 Nominees went includes from the same award ceremony/event Best
Special Effects
