Warning: there is animal cruelty/medical/references to sexism and child abuse
Maggie Hobson has different ideas: briefly; as Maggie Hobson [Brenda de Banzie:] she is the oldest of three daughters, when her father is not around she is in the business of manager of their shoe shop. But when she gets hold unlike her two sisters but she won't be getting married, because she is either too old at the age of 30 or/and she is too valuable to the shop, she comes up with the idea to marry William Mossop [John Miller:] he is a slightly simple and too kind, but highly skilled cobbler that works for her father and this is their story.
Generally speaking: the framework and pacing of this 107 minutes from is
good; it knows what it is doing and get on with it.
Art
and comedy; as this film is a black-and-white film, it just concentrates on
doing what it can to bring this will to live, so this basically means the
following; just doing their best to achieve it with location settings and
things within the scenes as well, which gives this film a clean and tidy
approach with a lot less possibility of having clutter, so what it meant to be
there is meant to be there. For the comedy as you would expect there are a
outdated references, but there is one sequence I can make reference to and that
is we have Mossop with his clothing under his arm and his pyjamas on, walking
to the bedroom with this kind of approach of: I am now off to do my civil duty
and that is to have intercourse with my wife on our first night as
husband-and-wife.
Character
developments and performances; on both counts they are well grounded or/and
explored; which simply means they are every day people living their lives and
for this film we are here to witness and experience just a part of it.
This film receives: 8/10, this film is excellent; after everything is said
and done, it just feels like anything less would be difficult to justify, so I
went with what I quickly went with. This film has some wards are credited to
its name such as 2 Winners; Berlin International Film Festival 1954 Golden
Berlin Bear David Lean and BAFTA Awards 1955 BAFTA Film Award Best British
Film. 4 Nominees which includes but not limited to from the same award ceremony
as previously stated; Best British Actor John Mills and Best British Actress
Brenda de Banzie
