You can't surf here, if you don't
live here: briefly; after many years away The
Surfer/other name [Younger: performers unknown names/Older: Nicolas Cage:] he
is in a well-paid job, yes it does get referenced once but I have forgotten,
apologies for that, he is heading towards a divorce. But he has come back to
his childhood location, with his son to begin with, to try and buy this
location but because he/they are outsiders they are not welcome here, but if I
had to guess he stays here for about a week living out of his car waiting for
this very important telephone call. The people that say he/they are not welcome
here are collectively known as "The Bay Boys" and there leader
Scally/other name [Julian McMahon:] he has grown up in this location and done
pretty well for himself as in one way or another he has a lot of influence and
likewise once or twice his job actually gets mentioned, but I have forgotten it
apologies again.
Generally speaking: the script; well... to begin with I gave it way too
much credibility as I thought it was trying to do something really clever of
basically; having our lead character; The Surfer in three different timelines
that converged around this location, but sadly this will not the case; the
younger and present; our lead role in separate timelines, but without giving
too much away not the old guy; so there is so much wasted potential here and I
have just realised that this script is; very much a locational based script
[meaning: whatever happened before or after ending/leaving this location; we
don't get to see it, okay it may get referenced but we are just here for this
location and the time within this location and that is it.] The framework and
pacing of this 100 minutes long is also not exempt from criticism as we stand
too long in one phase of this film [which I get it; it is about the struggle;]
but even with that being the case is still feels a bit too long, if you have
watched enough films in your life is on, you will know the difference between
running something like this outlay to a good length or running too long so it
loses its shine, in this case it is the latter, consequently not long enough in
the second phase to even care about it.
Art,
character developments, performances, action and comedy; the art by clear miles
is the strongest asset to this project; as it does a fantastic job of
encapsulating what this project is all about; being able to be captivating
[cinematography: landscapes and so on] then with unsettling from the
perspective of the heat, dehydration and now and again using a quick zoom or
something to that effect:] because of this art it clearly feeds into a
character developments as our lead character/Cage is suffering from being out
in the sun for too long; as he is dehydrated; the viewers get to witness some
of his past history in men and women bring and whilst he is in a public toilet
for a quick moment he sees this man staring back at him and then this old guy
that we had meant; which is meant to indicate he is potentially turning out
like him, a character developments for everyone else that is not connected to
our lead character they are all good and the same can be said for their
performances; but obviously a special mention has to go out to Cage and/or
McMahon: they really individually or together make this film tick along; they
have excellent chemistry.
Now
there isn't much action comedy; but when our character is having a difficult
time with this rat or a little later he hits this character in the face with
this sign [piece of long wood with an instruction on it:] these two moments can
be seen as dark comedy moments.
This film receives: 6/10, this film is good; this project has been one of
those titles that needed to be reflected on so that I can give it the right
mark, so after everything is said and done I think/I know I have assigned the
right mark after taking everything into consideration. But to make myself
crystal clear; it does have that one time viewing factor about it and if this
film didn't have the art and/or Cage or/and McMahon; this project would be
looking at we don't know it to be fair; but we can suggest easily a lesser mark
than what I have assigned to it and there is some extra voice over by our lead
character/role in the closing credits of this film. As of this content being
first created; it is a shame that this project doesn't have at least some
positive award nominees for either the art or/and the two performers I have
mentioned; either it individually or together; they all deserve at least one
nominee each in their respective fields or/and role types.
