P-p-p-pick up a Penguin!: Briefly; we meet Tom Michell [Steve Coogan:] a cynical,
sarcastic old man which is a teacher of English, that begins his new teaching
job, but somehow involves in teaching rugby when he knows absolutely nothing
and does not like rugby in the first place at St Georges College in Argentina
in the 1970s, but to impress a woman they rescue a Penguin from an oil spill,
but she leaves leaving him with a Penguin named Juan Salvador [Magellanic
penguins and life partners: Baba and Richard:] a rescued Penguin that Michell
has to adopt after many good efforts to return him to nature; this is their
story.
Generally speaking: the framework and pacing of this 112 minutes film is
predominantly good, but this film does have one massive problem and for some s
strange reason; it goes from having no background accompanying background music
which in turn makes this project feel and look like a very slow struggling
project to then having background music, which in turn makes this film find
definitely and certainly a spring in their steps to the rest of the film.
Comedy;
as I have just alluded to Michell at one point nicely or is nicely as he can
throwing Salvador back into the sea or from time to time Salvador being like
this councillor for various people at one point or another and on top of that
we have Michell being a very middle-aged British man with whit or sarcasm or
witty sarcasm and other bits and pieces as well
Art
and action; they need an excellent job of encapsulating the 1970s look and feel
and much later on we get to see Salvador take a swim
Character
developments and performances; they are all good versions of what they are
meant to be with the vast majority of them being good in-depth versions of
those character types, but let's be honest this film has Coogan in his penguins
counterparts and their individual or/and together chemistry to thank for
bringing this story to life as in a nutshell without giving too much away on
one hand we can clearly understand why Michell is the way he is or most
definitely a gigantic contributing factor, whilst on the other hand we can
clearly feel/see the positives and negatives of having a pet.
This film receives: 8/10, this film is excellent; yes after some thinking
about it I decided to award another mark even though this film does have a
problem which I mentioned much earlier, but on the whole the positives very
much outweigh the negative so I went with something higher instead of my
original marking based on it just felt a little bit low and much harder to justify
them the mark I went with; there are some extra bits and pieces at the end of
this film and finally at some point I would like to see this film pick up some
at minimum Nominees for some awards, because it deserves it and/or to be in
discussion for some Nominees.
