What a week this is: briefly; Lieutenant William Somerset [Morgan Freeman:]
he is a veteran that give it a week and he is retiring, because he is
disillusioned by the current state of his profession and wants out, but for the
next week he has got to work with an incoming detective to his precinct; Detective
David Mills [ Brad Pitt:] he is young, passionate and not so jaded as
Lieutenant Somerset; but they have a religious crime to solve.
Generally speaking: character developments and storyline/script; well we
get some exposition before and during the opening credits of character
developments; the storyline/script is solidly good, but I do think the ending
could have with some work as we never found out where these characters ended
up. The framework and pacing of this 127 minutes long; is best described as
very stop and start; it does take the film time to settle down or even when it
does find its groove... For some strange reason this film drifts in and out of
that, so one moment you think this film is really moving along and then you
think it is dawdling and/or anything else in the middle.
Action;
the crime and consequently investigation or/and working out things is one of
the strongest assets to this film by some distance, we don't get much in the
way of action; action sequences we do get one facing sequence with guns going
off
Character
developments and performances; the character developments are really solid
versions of what they are meant to be; but another strongest asset to this
project by some distance; is the entire cast performance; yes obviously when
you have Freeman and/or Pitt spearheading the project in question; you can't go
wrong really, but when you have a fully rounded cast of performances that are
of the same quality as your lead individuals/partnership, but just putting the
best in to their roles regardless of how big or small their roles are then it
is just a case of hitting a home run really.
This film receives: 8/10, this film is excellent; if you have never seen it before I
would suggest you do so, but please be careful because it doesn't really hit on
the religious aspects, I am not disrespecting this film because of that I am
just saying it very much says what it is on the side of the tin really. This
film also has some awards accredited to its name such as; 29 Winners which
includes but not limited to London Critics Circle Film Awards 1997 ALFS Award
Actor of the Year Morgan Freeman and MTV Movie + TV Awards 1996 MTV Movie Award
Most Desirable Male Brad Pitt. 44 Nominees which also include but not limited
to Academy Awards, USA 1996 Oscar Best Film Editing Richard Francis-Bruce and
back to the MTV Movie + TV Awards referenced earlier in the same year as well
MTV Movie Award Best On-Screen Duo Brad Pitt Morgan Freeman
