I wouldn't annoy her: briefly; we meet Carrie White [Sissy Spacek:] she is a
high school outcast, she comes from a very religious family, that doesn't have
any friends, that gets invited to the high school dance by Tommy Ross [William
Katt:] he is a popular kid, I could be wrong but I think he is possibly a
quarterback for the school team, but he also has a girlfriend which is okay
about this situation as she wants to give Carrie this opportunity; I believe
that this boyfriend and girlfriend meant well and have no ill intentions, even
though Ross declined the first time around; I'm sure nothing is set up or could
go wrong?
Generally speaking: I found the storyline/script, framework and pacing of
this 98 minute film to be slow, to the point where I can say okay we get it the
vast majority no one likes her, but as it relates to the character
developments; you could easily knock off 15 minutes and we would still get the
point of eventually everyone has a breaking point, that is how hard people push
her, the character developments are a bit redundant.
Art,
character developments and action; the art is highly creatively as Carrie shows
of her new gift as she turned the car upside down and it catches fire.
Character
developments and performances; by and large they are all good, as they put in
reliably good versions of high school characters in one capacity or another and
their performances reflect that, but let's be completely honest the
performances of Spacek and Piper Laurie as Margaret White: she is Carrie's
heavily religious Christian, psychopathic mother; individually or together are
strong performances as this sheltered and conditions young woman, by no fault
of her own has to go through so much garbage and when she has the power to
change things, which at first she uses it to protect herself and then later on
she becomes the monster that they have all created vs. in short the monster
nurtured and enforced this outlook and behaviour; it really is an excellent
example of; if you install this mentality, behaviour and reinforce it with
negativity, don't be too angry if the monster you have created knocks over a
few buildings and eventually turned on you and anyone else, so based on this I
will award this film an extra mark.
This film receives: 6/10, this film is good; I mean I went to go and see
this film with the person I want some of this content with at the cinema, which
you should go and see this film at the cinema when you have an opportunity, but
as I made reference to the beginning or somewhere near there, it does have some
negatives to it, as in for the vast majority of this film is just a case of
pushing Carrie until she breaks and then by comparison not too long with the
payoff. This film does have some awards accredited to its name such as 6
Winners which include but not limited to Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival 1977
Grand Prize Brian De Palma and pecial Mention Sissy Spacek For the acting. 9
Nominees which also include not limited to Academy Awards, USA 1977 Oscar Best
Actress in a Leading Role Sissy Spacek and Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Piper Laurie
