Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/religion and ritual/burning/terrorism/medical/references to homosexuality, sex, sexual assault and under age.

Conclave: basically the meaning of this word is to select a new pope has in this case the previous one has died; the man but has been left to take on this duty of Conclave is Thomas Cardinal Lawrence [Ralph Fiennes:] he is a British liberal and the Dean of the College of Cardinals, but he also wants out which the now deceased Pope refused his resignation.

Generally speaking: the framework and pacing of this 120 minutes film is mobile as this film is a location based film, meaning this number of Cardinals are sequestered in the confines of Vatican City to go through these voting round. I am not going to lie this film is 80% dialogue/monologue, 15% art and 5% action/investigation; so if you don't like dialogue/monologue based film, maybe this film is it for you: But for those that do, this film will suit you down to the ground.

Art; obviously the costumes, scenery and so on are of a very high quality indeed, this project has been given the most authentic and natural approach to the seriousness of this situation.

Action; this film could have done with a little bit more sleuthing around, I am not talking about too much more, but a comfortable pinch more than what we had.

Character developments and performances; the character developments are well rounded to reflect who they are as people/performances; Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence leads this cast excellently as someone that is giving this duty the utmost respect with also not wanting to be there, Stanley Tucci as Aldo Cardinal Bellini: he is an American liberal, that is in the running to become the new Pope; he puts in excellent supporting role, John Lithgow as Joseph Cardinal Tremblay: he is a Canadian moderate, he is another candidate in the running to become the new Pope: now don't get me wrong he is in; in this film but I would feel comfortable suggesting it is leaning towards limited so if I had to choose a word support role or limited role, I would say limited so you have been warned and yes you will still see him from time to time, it is always good to see him on the big screen and finally Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes: she was professional close to the recently deceased Pope, she is now the cardinals' head caterer, housekeeper and she is a very stern figure of a woman and at minimum I hope she receives some positive awards nominations for this performance. Because as I said she is a very stern figure of a woman, as one of those nuns that has been around for a while that in one way or another she can handle herself woman or man you are all the same to her.

This film receives: 7/10, this film is good; if you like talky-talky mystery films mixed/combined with the performers names individually or together I have mentioned then take a look at this film and yes it has some awards accredited to its name such as 6 Winners that includes Palm Springs International Film Festival 2025 Ensemble Cast Award John Lithgow Isabella Rossellini Stanley Tucci Ralph Fiennes Lucian Msamati [as Joshua Cardinal Adeyemi: he is a Nigerian that is all so in the running. 21 Nominees that includes Camerimage 2024 Golden Frog Main Competition Edward Berger (director) Stéphane Fontaine (cinematographer)
