Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful effects/environmental/man on woman violence/drugs/references to verbal abuse, racism, immigration, sexual assault and suicide

Stay away from this film by any cost: briefly; we meet this family unit known as the Heslop's; it is a very toxic environment and in this toxic environment we meet Muriel/other name [Toni Collette:] she takes a lot of verbal abuse or/and criticism, she is a big ABBA fan, she is obsessed about getting married and to be honest as you will see she is a psychopath as she lies so much and abuses situations to get what she wants when she wants. But however she finds a friend in Rhonda Epinstall [Rachel Griffith:] she is a woman that likes to party, that will also have problems with cancer

Generally speaking: I can't tell you how much I really disliked this script; and on reflection I understand it's point which I will discuss later, but on one hand did we have to go so low in the barrel and on the other hand this quick summing up process which I will discuss later also, just infuriated me and finally how this film deals with such a big topic of cancer is frankly disgusting. So if you're like me and dealt with a cancer situation need to home, allow me to give you some warning; may be give this film a miss. The framework and pacing of this 101 minutes film is of basic structure and designed to fulfil its purpose; in essence on the grand scale of things; this is hardly the biggest problem of this film and let's finish this section on a bit of comedy; if you are not the biggest fan of ABBA you also may want to give this film a miss as in one way or another you will be hearing some of their music and guess what the person and I don't know what some of the content with are not fans of ABBA.

Art, comedy, character developments and performances; well if you like Abba you will get along with this film; so you all hear our lead partnership of Muriel and her best friend Epinstall dressed up as the two female members of ABBA and perform Waterloo to win this competition. I didn't find this film at all amusing minus for one moment where the person that Muriel is marrying gives off the very clear body language of basically what the hell am I doing here marrying this person. I actually find broadly speaking the character developments of our lead role to be really offensive and I am difficult to offend, but as she steals from her family, puts herself first even when her apparent best friend has got cancer not once but twice and still thinks of herself and just herself and is a complete liar, then to towards the closing stages of the film to have this epiphany that she should change her ways or something to that effect, as she is turning out like her father, but then again, she can't blame some of the things she does on her father, that is a cheap get out clause and no I'm not defending him. On top of that we have her best friend still smoking after having cancer twice and permanently in a wheelchair now; so they do this whole entire running off into the sunset kind of thing to finish this film which on top of everything else, I just hated, no I really did just hated completely, Muriel's family minus her mother in toxic or/and abusive and the community likewise being a certain level of toxicity; it is clear to see and to say that I really didn't like this film, if this is what they were going for as it relates to the performances; they should be over the moon as I felt really awkward and uncomfortable watching this film unfold.

This film receives: 1/10, this film is poor; you know I gave it every opportunity to prove mean wrong, but this is one of the rare occasions where; this film just cheesed me off and the person, I watch some of this content with would agree with me that this film is completely garbage. I know, I know I have already made reference to this; but it is very much worthwhile repeating; Epinstall has suffered cancer twice already in her life which has left her in a wheelchair, but she is still smoking, I know it was a different world back then in the 1990s, but still someone should have told her if you continue to smoke it will probably encourage some form of cancer again, you know it is just one of those things where with everything else it is just one step too far and unfortunately I went to go and see this film at a cinema, yet somehow this film has quite a few awards accredited to its name such as 9 Winners that includes but not limited to 20/20 Awards 2015  Winner Felix Best Actress Toni Collette and 12 Nominees that includes but also not limited to from the same award ceremony/event Best Song ABBA "Dancing Queen." It also got nominated for a BAFTA Award in 1996: BAFTA Film Award Best Screenplay - Original P.J. Hogan Australia.
