Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful effects/shooting/stabbing/burning/domestic violence/vehicle crashing/drugs/medical/reference to learning disability.

It Is Thanksgiving in Brooklyn, New York in 1988: briefly; we meet Bobby Green/other names [Joaquin Phoenix:] he is a manager of El Caribe nightclub; he has links to the criminal element and he also has a girlfriend by the name of Amada Juarez [Eva Mendez:] she likes him away he is and doesn't want anything to change that, she is also fully aware that her boyfriend has another life which involves the chief of police at the NYPD Deputy Chief Albert "Burt" Grusinsky [Robert Duvall:] which he is currently promoting to captain; Joseph "Joe" Grusinsky [Mark Wahlberg:] he is a very serious individual, but at least his father is proud of one of his sons.

Generally speaking: this framework and pacing of this 117 minutes film is just really, really, really slow; this film would have been given a noticeably higher mark if it wasn't so slow.

Art; we get these black-and-white photographs at the beginning of this project; they are good.

Action; likewise these are good for what they are; hit-and-run, undercover and location hits by the NYPD.

Character developments and performances; the character developments are likewise good versions of what they are meant to be, but then again they do need the likes of Phoenix, Warburg, Duvall and Mendez all to really be individually or/and in different numbers the driving force behind this film; to this entry compensate for how slow this film is; as in they have to generate some kind of momentum to make this film work smoothly and clearly let's just say it as it is; they are in the lifeline of this project and without them; this film would have collapsed onto its knees.

This film receives: 5/10, this film is mixed; obviously if you like one or more of these performers I have mentioned in this content, take a look at this title. But without blowing my horn too much, I would just recommend keeping in mind what I have said about this film being slow. This film also has some awards accredited to its name; 1 Winner Golden Rooster Awards 2008 Audience Award Best International Actor Joaquin Phoenix and 5 Nominees which includes  Teen Choice Awards 2008 Teen Choice Award Choice Movie Actor: Drama Mark Wahlberg.
