Pay-Per-View Rewind of: WCW Bash at the Beach 16/07/1995 Match 2/Part 2 by AverageMansReviews - Spoiler Alarm!

Disclaimer: I am not or never likely to be a professional wrestler

Background information: we have this interview segment interviewer "Mean" Gene Okerlund where he tells us how this match came to be and then interviews "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart and then the WCW World Television Champion The Renegade. Now just to make sure before I said this I would do some research just to make sure I was right and I am; it was an absolute stupid mistake to make this character known as The Renegade [in short for those people that don't know he was a knockoff version of The Ultimate Warrior] which I will stick up for the man behind The Renegade Richard Wilson a little and say this gimmick was doomed to fail from the very second it crossed someone's mind to come up with this gimmick, because the entire Ultimate Warrior was as far as I can see it designed to be adrenaline fuelled untamed passion with a colourful parents with legendary promos which made very little sense, but you understood he was going to run to the ring and give you everything; yes likewise The Ultimate Warrior [James Brian Hellwig] also had a reputation for being a stiff worker [this is wrestling terminology; it means in this case working with him in the ring was going to be a painful experience.]

My point here being The Renegade seems to be a very green all-round wrestler in every sense [this is another wrestling terminology; green means begin or inexperienced or raw talent] so how was he going to exactly come anywhere close to the standard of The Ultimate Warrior? And as I have already made reference to The Ultimate Warrior wasn't exactly perfect and to answer my question he wasn't. You see if you don't come up with a plausible explanation to have essentially a carbon copy with differences such as The Undertaker and Kane or in the mould, but completely different like Sting and Darby Allin in AEW where in essence Sting by working with Darby is saying "He will be an successor to our style of characters after I have held up my bat." Or you can have a parody character like Gillberg [parody of Goldberg,] but as the word "parody" would suggest and generally speaking I wouldn't expect too much from these type characters, even though Gillberg has this legendary status because everyone remembers him and his sparklers.

But back to this pay-per-view the crowd are not buying into The Renegade, because they can see what the hierarchy of the WCW are/were trying to do and one final thing in this section; we have Schiavone in "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff's telling us again why we are having this match.

Match/Stipulations: "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff vs. the  WCW World Television Champion The Renegade [with "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart:] Singles for the  WCW World Television Championship

Match Attributes:

Match Quality: 1/10

Match Storyline: 1/10

Crowd Participation: 4/10

On Commentary: Tony Schiavone & Bobby "The Brain" Heenan  6/10

Satisfying Conclusion: 1/10

Recommend Watch: 6/10

Match Total: 19/60 - this match is poor

Comments: let's be positive about this match kind of for a couple of seconds; it is so bad hence why in the Recommend Watch category I gave it 6/10, because you just have to see it. I mean based on this one match The Renegade should be absolutely nowhere near a wrestling ring, based on the grounds when he can't even get a single leg drop kick or a dropkick [on commentary they call it a dropkick, this is one of those occasions where if you want to see it as a single or standard dropkick or whatever it was meant to be, I mean you have plenty of times to see this move; he doesn't do it once, he doesn't do it twice, but he does it three different times in this match and each time it just looks awkward; you know it comes across as " Whoops I screwed that one up let me try again." and so on and so forth; even Schiavone points out a good dropkick when Orndorff does a dropkick saying " sending Renegade in [Irish whip into the ropes and catching him on the return] and a dropkick and that was a good one fans, right on target in the face." In hindsight and on reflection I have to see this as a burial from Schiavon aimed at The Renegade, but he isn't wrong. Full disclosure we don't have the best prospective on this dropkick because we are in line with this piece of action as in behind The Renegade taking the dropkick, but having said that what we do see of it; it is a good, solid and reliable dropkick.

Moving on next; now full disclosure I don't know what is being said here, but you can clearly see and very faintly hear/see The Renegade potentially calling the next spot as he has Orndorff in a side headlock standing up [let's just say I think the camera captures this really well; so it exposes a fundamental secret of the wrestling business.]

There is more; the chemistry/character work is just ugly from everyone involved in this match including the Referee [Nick Patrick] how it should have been is Orndorff Heel, The Renegade [with "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart] Babyfaces and Nick Patrick neutral.

But the crowd cheers for Orndorff, I mean he told someone in the crowd to shut their mouths and he did the classic Heel tactics of sand in The Renegade's eyes, but they still cheered for Orndorff, usually I would say this would be the crowd aiming or deliberately going against these performers character work, but in this case the crowd are happy to see him as he is a veteran and has been around for a long time so regardless of Babyface or Heel they were just happy to see him in the ring again. On top of that [immediately after the sand has been thrown] we have Heenan saying "Right in the face, right in the eyes this will slow him down." Schiavone follows up with " The referee could have disqualified him right there, but I'm not so sure if Nick Patrick knew what happened there." [Me; I beg to differ Patrick is possibly too close to the action or not in the right spot, yes he is on the opposite/far side to where the sand is being thrown but the fact he shields himself from some of the sand being thrown; yes if you look he turned slightly to protect himself from the sand and yes I know in rehearsals or going through the match backstage he knows it is coming maybe this is speculation on my part, but in a live-action here and now he has no plausible deniability.] But I digress Heenan follows up with "There is a lot that gets passed Nick Patrick and Randy Anderson." So by Heenan discrediting their Referees it gives some deniability because he is absolutely awful at his job; which once again speculation but it also tells me that either Heenan knows or could have just been told over his headset to say this or in fairness and balance Schiavone likewise knows or has just been informed as well to what is coming, you see by using this dialogue on commentary Heenan has either given plausible deniability to Patrick by discrediting him and Anderson which is justified at the end of this match consequently protects Patrick from this complete and utter shower of manure.

Which by the ending of this match makes The Renegade [with "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart] Heels, because The Renegade celebrates with the crowd booing [there is some cheering momentarily later on in this match slot,] but it in essence justifies the crowd being on Orndorff 's side with Hart giving him his Championship and his theme music playing with Schiavone and Heenan in short talking about what just happened and replaying it, with Orndorff by default looking as the Babyface; yes don't get me wrong he is still a Heel but as I have just said by default if anyone looks like a Babyface after this match it would be him.

Orndorff goes for his finisher after this match on The Renegade which is the Piledriver and as everyone should know by its reputation is if it goes wrong the effects of this move are life changing, so I was not best pleased to see The Renegade take a relatively short time in real-time, but a long time to do he is part in performing this move. It is a good thing that The Renegade is in the ring with a veteran, because it was Orndorff trying to keep things going and trying to get things done and trying to make The Renegade look good which and his part Orndorff did everything he could.

Basic Result: the WCW World Television Champion The Renegade [with "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart] Retains his Championship here.

Now sadly these two competitors are no longer with us so RIP Paul Orndorff Jr. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff 29/10/1949-12/07/2021 and RIP Richard "The Renegade" Wilson 19/10/1965-23/02/1999.
