Warning:
there is flashing effects/colourful effects/drugs/domestic
violence/medical/references to racism and suicide.
Rise,
fall and rise again of The Man in Black:
briefly; this is the life story of J. R./John R. Cash/Johnny Cash [Younger: J.
R.: Ridge Canipe/Older: Joaquin Phoenix:] he strongly believes he will make a
record one-day and on his journey he will meet June Carter [Reese Witherspoon:]
she is a musician/comedian; it turns into their life story.
Generally
speaking: the framework and pacing of this
136 minutes film is; it is for me such a drag; at the beginning it is like a
stone skimming across the pond throughout his life and trust me when I say I
get it; but for some reason they went with a reliable way of doing things, but
the execution of it was poorly done. I believe that the biggest problem this
film has is; it is just so incredibly slow, which makes this film in essence
tiresome because there is no change of gears; hey what can I say; it just amble
along; will heavily show in my marking of this film.
Art; now let's be positive about this film when we are
in a particular time period for long enough; the set designs, wardrobe and all
that really does take its audiences on a journey throughout life itself and
obviously we have music being performed so this is all good; but on a quick
side note now and again Cash/Phoenix does hold his instrument briefly weirdly,
I have no idea why this is. I am just pointing it out to reassure you that it
isn't you; yes he holds his instrument in a weird fashion briefly now and again
and the person I watch some of this content with agreed with me; once you pick
up on it, you'll know what I mean, because it will then stick out like a sore
thumb.
Action; we have a scene involving a tractor [yes I am clutching at straws to find a little bit of action and this is it;I am not criticising this film for not having action in it, because it isn't designed with action in mind; but then again I am just pointing out and acknowledging I am clutching at straws.]
Character developments and performances; the character
developments are well rounded versions of the people they are meant to be and
likewise the cast performances for the vast majority are good; there is good
chemistry throughout this cast. But let's be completely honest either
individually or/and together Phoenix and Witherspoon; they are the driving
force behind this project; they chemistry is truly priceless and they should
have definitely won more awards back in the day.
This
film receives: 6/10, this film is good; it is a
solidly good film, that if you are a fan of Phoenix or/and Witherspoon you
should take a look at this film especially if you like country music or/and
Johnny Cash. This film has some awards accredited to it; 45 Winners that
includes Academy Awards, USA 2006 Oscar Best Performance by an Actress in a
Leading Role Reese Witherspoon [which I will return to this event later on,]
but for now Young Artist Awards 2006 Young Artist Award Best Performance in a
Feature Film - Supporting Young Actor Ridge Canipe and 48 Nominees [back to the
Academy Awards 2006 Oscar Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Joaquin Phoenix and Costume Designers Guild Awards 2006 CDG Award Excellence in
Period Film Arianne Phillips
