16 hours earlier:
basically; Jimmy "The Gravedigger" Conlon/Father Christmas [Liam
Neeson:] an old veteran hitman which is a bit of a drunk kills the son Danny
Maguire [Boyd Holbrook:] which is a loose cannon and gets himself into some
trouble. But his father Shawn Maguire [Ed Harris:] is a ex-criminal that still
has links to their world but nowadays is a clean businessman and best friends
with Jimmy, until this situation. But Jimmy had no choice it will either Danny
or his estranged son Mike Conlon [Joel Kinnaman:] which he hasn't done anything
wrong, he was just doing his job as a limousine driver and if he had his choice
he would very much like to stay away from his father and/or the criminal
lifestyle he is in or generally speaking just to stay away anyway as he is a
good person with a family.
The framework and pacing for this
114 minutes film is generally speaking something straightforward, but having
said that now and again there are these quick moving effects, this is so
amateurish and lazy, because I can see what they are trying to do here and that
is give the illusion of speed and fluency. But consequently as I have already
loaded to it just comes off as amateurish and lazy; lazy because this is my
opinion and yes speculation of; maybe if we do it this way our audience won't
notice it is a cheap and tacky way to create this illusion, which if you
haven't guessed has failed.
Action: they
are either from bang, bang you're dead or/and the realm of chaotic action when
this film gets going.
Character developments and performances: once again generally speaking they are all pretty much
safe and reliable versions of their character types and likewise their
performances reflect that. But however there is one character flaw which really
annoyed me and it is with Shawn at no point does he make reference to Jimmy
that he knows his son Danny is more often than not finding himself in mess
which he has to clear up [as he makes reference to this to his son roughly
around the beginning section of this film,] but it is on principle he has to
kill James and his son Mike, as in my son was too big for his boots but he was
my son and his mother and my wife is finding this all very hard so I have to
bring her and myself peace. You see this very small, yet very crucial character
development makes Shawn look and sound like a well rounded three dimensional
character. But without this it makes this character look and sound incredibly
weak, because he is only out for revenge without talking about this massive
elephant in the room that basically his son began this sequence of events,
which I think Jimmy makes reference to the fact roughly Danny being in
something deep and I can't remember Shawn replied, but I remember it not really
giving Shawn any of this three-dimensional character developments.
Art: in
the first section of the ending credits we have this colourful bits and pieces
of the film we have just seen; this is engaging and all good.
This film receives: 4/10, this film is mixed: well to be more precise it
has comfortably enough to be given this mark, I mean don't get me wrong if you
are a fan of either or together of Liam Neeson, Ed Harris and Vincent D'Onofrio
as Detective John Harding: a NYPD veteran detective which has been after James
for years, I should very quickly point out he has a small role like now and
again in this film, but you may just want to keep your expectations in check.
