Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful effects/man on woman violence/sexual assault/drugs/shooting/stabbing/bashing in/cutting/bodily functions/biting/breaking/burning/medical/reference to cancer and it goes dark; it goes dark, so you have been warned.

I see dead people: briefly; at this charity event which has his name we meet Slater King [Channing Tatum:] he is a billionaire that has his own tech company; by the name of King Tech, it is discussed that this individual has a history, but he is better now that he spends more time on an island that he has bought; we/he meets this struggling if my memory is correct struggling performer [apologies if I am wrong] Frida [Naomi Ackie:] alongside her friend they are going to be waitresses for this evening, but Frida has a secondary motive and that is to meet King again; well she does/they do and get invited back to his private island, which I am sure nothing will or can go wrong.

Generally speaking: the framework and pacing of this 102 minutes film has a problem; experienced film viewers would have hopefully understand that films such as this one uses a slow progression/build up which if you can know when to change the gears then the transaction should be naturally smooth. But in reality this title takes about 40 minutes to get going and yes they do use basically a sequence of events which had been shortened down to somewhat try and speed things up, but that can only work for a short time before this becomes stale as well. Before I looked at this film I honestly thought it was much/comfortable closing to 120 minutes; this film could have done with being no more than 90 minutes long.

Art, Character developments and performances; this film is very clean, tidy and elegant as it relates to the scenes construction; be it out this fundraising event or at least private island; they did a fantastic job of putting across and that this member of this partnership; character has very much created his own world where every he is, so the character versions are vibrant as without giving too much away; this is completely normal for these people to do this or/and it becomes normal. So the cast all put in positive performances; but as far as I am concerned this is Tatum's delivering a notice to the film industry that he can do complex characters and more than briefly comedy and it is a breakthrough performance; that he can be given a multilayered character with a partnership with in this case Ackie or lead role work; with the knowledge that this is what he can pull out. For Ackie; she could do with more action roles as she seems very comfortable in this background and we could do with some female faces in the action genre; Ackie and Tatum are the driving force behind the success of this film; individually or together.

Action and comedy; this seems like one of those occasions where even though I have already indicated it let's just say it again; these action sequences are graphic; so you will see weapons and blood and the comedy ranges from the movement of this chair as in finding the perfect place for it or/and this marijuana alarm; we have this character basically indicating to Frida; someone is on their way [look out situation] so the louder she makes a marijuana reference hopefully Frida will hear her.

This film receives: 9/10, this film is excellent; the only reason that this film didn't get the full 10 is because of the framework and pacing. But if you like your weird films take a look at this film and obviously if you are a fan of Ackie and/or Tatum; you must see this film.
