Review Time

Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful effects/animal cruelty/transformation/squashing/breaking/disfigurement/regeneration/biting/whilst I am on the subject is a PG film, yes I would feel much more comfortable recommending at minimum caution, because even though I went to go and see this film at the cinema today for its 15 year anniversary, this project has very much dark/horror themes.

What world will she pick?: Briefly; Coraline Jones [voiced by Dakota Fanning:] is a young girl that is very much neglected by her family that finds a new world; eventually she has a choice between her old life or this new world for a very small price; all she has to do is give up her eyes for buttons, but she will come across a roaming cat by the name of The Cat [voiced by Keith David:] he goes where he wants, where he wants including but not limited to going back and forth between these two worlds.

Generally speaking: the framework and pacing of this 100 minute film is good, but it most definitely needs some time to get going; the now and again background music does a good job creating the atmosphere at that specific time.

Art and action; as this project is a stop-motion animation; it is clear to see where the artistic visions; as at some point we get to see  Coraline portrait in a bed of flowers or/and when this character at one point or another goes through this metamorphosis for example a spider to go on to her spider's web which has Coraline on it; this is all excellent.

Character developments and voice performances; on both counts for the vast majority; they are all good; but notably a little bit more specific and put a little bit more substance as well. On reflection it does need Coraline/Fanning and The Cat/David and their chemistry; in the other world; you know Coraline needs someone to go back and forth with; someone that has experience/knowledge of this ongoing situation, this is one of those occasions where in hindsight this relationship is crucial to the success of this film in my opinion, because without The Cat/David; and Coraline/Fanning would be facing this situation on her own and that would potentially be too much screen time on her own as in the only one that is going through this situation on her own, but then again we don't have to worry about this because as I have quite clearly indicated she has a supporting character in The Cat/David.

This film receives: 8/10, this film is excellent; if you like dark  stop-motion animation projects this will you down to the ground, if you're going with a family viewing experience I would recommend yet again cautioned , if you’re wondering they took the 15 years anniversary from 2008, when they began working on this project and there are two ending credits little bits and pieces; one is for the ending credits and the other is at the end of the ending credits; they are just little bits and pieces. This film also has some awards accredited to its name such as 8 Winners that includes BAFTA Awards 2009 BAFTA Children's Award Best Feature Film Bill Mechanic Henry Selick Claire Jennings Mary Sandell Alliance of Women Film Journalists 2009 EDA Female Focus Award Best Animated Female Dakota Fanning "Coraline Jones." Nominations which includes BAFTA Awards 2010 Best Animated Film and Henry Selick and Black Reel Awards 2010 Black Reel Best Voice Performance Keith David
