Review Time

Warning: there is flashing/colourful effects/animal cruelty/animal feeding/shooting/stabbing/dislocating/melting/medical

Generally speaking this film is meh:  Mills [Adam Driver:] he comes from the planet Somaris, he is a pilot, he undertook this space expedition, which is two years long and two years away from his family including his daughter Nevine [Chloe Coleman:] which is extremely ill and is why Mills took this job in the first place to pay for her treatment. But tragically on the way back to Somaris; this ship gets hit by some Meteorites and consequently it has to crash land on this little planet known as Earth, in the Cretaceous period, but that isn't all there was only one survivor from the cryogenic sleeping tubes Koa [Ariana Greenblatt:] a young girl of about 9 years old, that is from the other territories of Somaris, so because of this they speak a different language and the translators are broken, yes she does pick up some English; but there is a language barrier there, Mills' lies to her so she will go with him. Because they only have a certain amount of time to get to the escape pod and leave Earth behind before it is too late.

The framework and pacing of this 93 minutes film is on reflection a mixture between awkward and straightforward, basically it has problems; because this film has a very small cast of four people not including the person that provides voice over for computerised devices; two main characters and then two small character roles and not forgetting even in the main two characters individually or together as a partnership there is a language barrier which yes as I have already stated she picks up some English, but the fact remains there is a language barrier and yes I know about body language and everything to do with that is on the table and there is some there to eventually create a bond. But there isn't enough here, I mean throughout this film why couldn't Koa learn more English, I am not asking her to be flowing in English by the end of this film, but have a basic understanding of it at the very least. Because based on these two points; it would indicate to  Mills she is a very smart child and secondly but more importantly it would fill up some of this empty space and not forgetting give the illusion of a better pacing, but eventually it seems to find a rhythm and as I have already said becomes straightforward and as the person I watched this film with said and I am paraphrasing here; this is one of those situations based films, where we are just here for this situation. But having said that it didn't do the background on why they were doing this exploration anyway.

Comedy: we have small moments of comedy where for an example  Mills squashes this massive fly on his back and let's just say it's essence is like glue and Koa finds this funny.

Art/Action: the art is the biggest asset to this project by a galaxy far far away; be it these locations planets, in space, dinosaurs, these stills at the end of the film rotating forward in time and anything else I may have missed. They really did have the imagination and concepts what they wanted to put in place and how to incorporate them. So from a visual perspective this film doesn't disappoint, the action sequences obviously incorporating the art as well, to be fair to this film they have gone with the outlay of Jurassic Park 1993 [full disclosure I haven't seen this film for long time,] but you get that kind of feeling as it relates to the presentation and the mobility of those action sequences mixed in with a bit of science fiction as it relates to this film.

Character developments and Performances: minus everything I have already referenced, I mean if this is what they were going for I would say they got it. But for me these were a paint by numbers character developments and these performances solid, but I have to be a little bit fair here, I appreciated the red powder on the table way of communicating to one another, but having said that I'm not joking here when I say they could have really done with a third person to make this trio just to add more substance any substance.

This film receives: 4/10, this film is mixed; as I have made it crystal clear by now this film has issues, but it clearly also has positives. I don't know what else to say here, other than if you like science fiction mixed in with a little bit like Jurassic Park 1993, take a look at this film, but just go in with sensible expectations [I should quickly point out I am aware that Jurassic Park does come from a section of the science fiction genre, but in this case I mean flying spaceship and a different planet and our planet when some time ago.]
