The legendary puzzle box is back
and it has been updated for the modern world: in a nutshell Riley McKendry [Odessa A'zion] with her
boyfriend Trevor [Drew Starkey] who suggests to her that she/they do this
robbery, he changes his mind because she is a recovering substance abuse, where
these two had met in a 12 step program, but they go to steal whatever is in
this miniature vault; it is this elegant cube puzzle similar to the Rubik's
cube, but the difference between the Rubik's cube [the Rubik's cube may just
annoy you and maybe hit's someone in the eye when you throw it away in
frustration,] but this cube wants bodies in return for each configuration you
make until you complete the game and you can choose your reward from Life,
Knowledge, Love, Sensation, Resurrection or Power.
The
pacing of this 120 minutes film is well really slow to begin with in fact they
could have easily taken off 25 to 30 minutes, that way this film would have had
some consistent get up and go to it. Don't get me wrong when we see/experience
more of this puzzle box on any level including the Hell Priest/Pinhead [Jamie
Clayton] and/or the Cenobites then this film firstly has a more quicker pacing
and all-round identity to it.
The
art is likewise [just to highlight this once more around or the effect of these
characters in the previous paragraph] is excellent and highly creative as they
transport us from our world into their plane of existence. I don't know what to
put here, because as I have already indicated the art is clearly a massive
positive to this film, but I can't really describe it in any great detail,
because of its graphic nature. So without being too graphic; for an example but
it goes for all the art; the wardrobe and costume designs are of a impeccable
standard like the original films, but also updated because without being
disrespectful which is not my intention to the original, the the technological
[so nothing against the artists themselves,] but from a technological
standpoint they have clearly had a look at the original franchise, taken that
similar tone and incorporated a fresh up-to-date presentation, which is a great
idea because if everything is done well from an artistic perspective even
though this is a reboot it can stand shoulder to shoulder with its previous film
titles and briefly yes the action sequences are good.
The
character developments and performances; apologies for repeating myself here,
but the normal characters/unchanged characters follow their character types and
consequently their performances reflect that, but all of the rest are a good,
the more and more time we get to spend with them.
This film receives: 6/10, this film is good; as I have already said they
could have easily taken off 25 to 30 minutes of this film and the human
unchanged characters are safe and reliable versions of what they are meant to
be. But anything situated on any level around Hell Priest/Pinhead and this
individual's domain, surrounding characters or anything else is all good, so if
there was to be a sequel [I am just saying, I am not saying there is a sequel
or another project] and just saying next time you may want to start with a more
lively approach, instead of this which almost put me to sleep, on reflection
the only reason I gave this project another mark, consequently making it a good
film is as I have already made crystal clear throughout this review or as
clearly as I can the positives of this project once things get going really gigantic
assets/positive to this reboot.
