Korn: Freak on a Leash; Music Video 1999 by AverageMansReviews

Review Time

Warning: there is colourful effects/shooting

Freak on a Leash; by Korn: this music video goes on for roughly 5 minutes; I believe the concept of this video to be, why are we so intent in getting our children to grow up so quickly, as this video will show these children have to break curfew and break into this no trespassing location [for all intents and purposes I think this was meant to symbolise childhood] just to play hopscotch with each other or/and one of these children pick up a baseball bat and mitt.

But back to growing up; even if it is by design or as this security guard, by accident as he accidentally drops his gun and it goes off and the bullet misses this young girl just wanting to play hopscotch, it goes through this animated world into reality to destroy everything in its path [as to illustrate this is reality, things go wrong or we something can almost hit us or we don't get what we deserve or sometimes you just have to do what you have to do these are adult things] to the band Korn as they have had many shots fired at them in their life, to signify the emotional, mental and sometimes physical wear and tear of life at this backdrop and surrounding location would suggest as there are many upon many holes, this bullet goes around them as they are playing this track as the lead vocalist Jonathan Davis uses his vocals [freestyle/alternative vocalist singing would be the best way to describe it] to stop it and turned around to go back still causing destruction, back into this where this young girl playing hopscotch grabs it in her hand and returns it to the security guard. With the facial expressions/mannerisms to indicate "I believe this is yours, I will carry my responsibilities when it is time to do so, but for now I am a child." The security guard is left on his hands and knees with the bullet in his hands [his facial expressions in fact his whole demeanour and body language suggesting] "I could have taken her childhood away from her Which has its own leashes, depending of disability or illnesses or others or worse, that is my cross to carry for the rest of my life." As we see/hear these children going off to play with the music video ending with this placard swinging on this security fencing of NC Trespassing MC.4266.60.

The artistic vision for this music video perfectly goes with this track as in the animated uses these dark tones in this already dark night to imply this military curfew is to get these kids ready for war; war means life, as I have already illustrated about the band section, real life sections and also returning to the animated world.

The title for this track is also interesting "Freak On a Leash" this in itself could imply that we all freaks, but however when we get through childhood, it is no longer acceptable to be a freak; meaning to conform to be drawn being on a leash constructing by what society deems to be acceptable or by this point possibly of some of the life choices we have made may be our leash around us. I know there will be probably some people out there saying something to the effect of " from the day we are born to the day we die we have a leash around our necks as it relates to conformity as in we go to nursery, we go to school, we go to high school and so on. I get this and I understand it, but I like to believe that some parents regardless of the pairing or a style of relationship, give their children sometime to be children life comes with more leashes and finally  "Freak On a Leash" could always be a reference to because we are not allowed to express ourselves, so we suppress it would internally over time make us freaks of how our lives are going or gone.

This film receives: 10/10, this film is top-notch entertainment; this will stand the test of time as an artistic vision, musically it was just or either about roundabout the time before a new music movement was about to happen called New Metal [and it's so many sub-genres of metal; I am not joking here it is like a pyramid or family tree of different types of metal, for some examples; Death Metal, Speed Metal and Battle Metal] But I digress  it did so much for this band's career and yes this is from my neck of the woods as it relates to my alternative lifestyle and I have even seen this band live, this music video has awards credited to its name 7 in total; 3 Winners; for one example; Grammy Awards 2000; Grammy; Best Short Form Music Video Korn [artist] Todd McFarlane [video director] Jonathan Dayton [video director] Valerie Faris [video director] Graham Morris [video director] Bart Lipton [video producer] Terry Fitzgerald [video producer.] 4 Nominations MTV Video Music Awards [VMA] 1999; VMA Video of the Year Korn.
