Review Time
Warning:
there is flashing effects/colourful effects/medical component
Storyline/Characters/Performances: in one way or another these components all go hand-in-hand; Storyline it is dull, really dull; basically we have this top of
the line spaceship [The Avalon] transporting these people [5000 Colonists and
258 Crew of the Homestead Company] from Earth to Homestead II, but the journey
takes 120 years so everyone has to go inside a hibernation capsule; but
something goes wrong.
I
can't stress how dull this film is; I mean I like science fiction films so I
get where they are coming from here, I mean I get it; it is about the journey
so it has very little to do with arriving at their destination. But having said
that if you are going to use this form of storytelling for the love of god put
a lot more of anything in it and I know this film looks at and explorers the
loneliness of our lead Character/Performer of Preston/Pratt to begin with so by
them doing that this way we get to experience what he is experiencing and
likewise when Lane/Lawrence comes in to the film we get to experience what she
is experiencing as well.
But
either with these two individually being on their own or together including
either Arthur/Sheen or Mancuso/Fishburn this can either become dull or generic.
I mean don't get me wrong from a performance perspective they are what you
expect them to be so within the parameters of their characters they do a good
job with on-screen chemistry and all that in particular Arthur/Sheen [he is
this android bartender] which whenever he is on screen he does break things up
a little, I mean even when we have these characters/performers on screen in a
paring or more this film still moves at the same pacing and the ending style to
this film is not worth the 116 minutes of watching this film, because there is
a massive time jump of 88 years, so we don't even get a montage or anything
like this to see what happened over this timeframe? Are you serious! Not to
give too much away but to be honest at the same time yes we get a little bit of
narration from Lane/Lawrence and we see what they have grown and that is it. I
know I have made my feelings known about this already in this review, but still
come on people you can come up with better than this surely.
Art/Action: now we come to the two biggest assets to this project
being it individually or going hand-in-hand; this film is a treat for the eyes
be it the general outer space scenes or individually or together having our
lead partnership in space suits connected to
a tether [Preston/Pratt] dealing with this situation or tethers Preston/Pratt and Lane/Lawrence]
on their first date or for a final example having issues with the gravity on
The Avalon as [Lane/Lawrence] gets trapped in this swimming pool water as
eventually she gets trapped in this sphere shape of swimming pool water.
So in fairness and balance it is absolutely no surprise to me that this project has Won an Award for its Art; Art Directors Guild 2017; Fantasy Film; Excellence in Production Design Award; Guy Hendrix Dyas [production designer,] David Lazan [art director,] Luke Freeborn [art director,]Gregory S. Hooper [art director,] Hugh D.G. Moody [art director,] Michael H. Ward [art director,] John Collins [art director,] Paula Loos [assistant art director,]Drew Monahan [assistant art director,] Gary Warshaw [assistant art director,] Brittany Hites [assistant art director,] Steven M. Saylor [set designer,] Trey Shaffer [graphic designer,] Kevin Kalaba [graphic designer,] Josh Nizzi [illustrator,] Ed Natividad [illustrator,] Tani Kunitake [illustrator,] Daren Dochterman [illustrator,] Tully Summers [illustrator,] Laurent Ben-Mimoun [illustrator,] Igor Knezevic [illustrator,] Richard K. Buoen [illustrator,] Collin Grant [storyboard artist,] Ray Harvie [storyboard artist,] Mark Vena [storyboard artist,] C. Scott Baker [set designer,] Robert Andrew Johnson [set designer,] Jeffrey D. McDonald [set designer,] Allen Coulter [set designer,] Josh Lusby [set designer,] Dean Wolcott [set designer,] Anshuman Prasad [set designer,] Noelle King [set designer,] Scott Herbertson [set designer,] Mark Hitchler [set designer,] Bria Kinter [set designer,] Patrick Dunn-Baker [set designer,] Karl J. Martin [set designer,] Randall D. Wilkins [set designer,] John Moredock [set designer] and Gene Serdena [set decorator;] as you can see in one way or another it took all of these people to bring the beauty of this film to life.
This film receives: 5/10, this film is mixed; in one way or another this
project is either something more or less than this mark for relatively short
moments, but for The majority of this film this mark is a fair representation of this
film; I mean let's not forget the issues of which I have discussed in this review as well. this film title has also been Nominated for two Oscars; Academy Awards,
USA 2017 Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures [Original Score]
Thomas Newman. Best Achievement in Production Design Guy Hendrix Dyas
[production design] & Gene Serdena [set decoration.] Either Won or Nominated
this film has 13 Awards to its name.
