Die Hard 1988 by AverageMansReviews
Review Time
Warning: there is flashing effects/colourful
effects/drugs/shooting in the heads/breaking of the neck
Storyline: it is good; it is well
structured over roughly 132 minutes, it confidently and comfortably knows what
it is doing from beginning to end and sticks to the plan.
Action/Comedy/Art: now at some point
we have two out of the three components going hand-in-hand [Action/Comedy]
these two components go consistently hand-in-hand for moments at a time; Police
Detective McLean/Willis sends down a dead terrorist/henchman in an elevator
with a Father Christmas hat on with a message written on his shirt which
Gruber/Clay/Rickman reads "Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho." And
then later on we have New York Police Detective McLean/Willis throwing a dead
terrorist/henchman out of the window to hit this Police vehicle [LAPD Sergeant
Al Powell's/VelJohnson Police vehicle] to send a very transparent message that
there is something happening going down here at the Nakatomi Plaza that
absolutely shouldn't be happening here] and not forgetting New York Police
Detective McLain's/Willis words of "Welcome to the party pal."
Action
individually; New York Police Detective McLean/Willis is trying to get off the
roof of the Nakatomi Plaza; just before something happens so he uses a
emergency firefighter hose to use as rope to jump off and swing on the outside
of this building and then breakthrough a window of the Nakatomi Plaza to get
back in.
Comedy
individually; there is this limousine driver [Argyle/Gilyard Jr.] waiting
inside this parking lot [Tower style] to hear from New York Detective
McLean/Willis to hear how things are going with his Wife, so now and again the
viewers will see what kind of mischief he is getting up to whilst waiting to
hear from New York Police Detective McLean/Willis.
Action & Art; there is this helicopter being engulfed by flames as it falls down the Nakatomi Plaza. The art individually; there are some very good-looking scenes; yellow as this Plane is landing or these orange skies or these orange skies with these thin dark clouds [as the Sun is setting;] now and again appearances from the Sun and this 3-D model of this building plan of this project in Indonesia.
Characters/Performances: including the
on-screen chemistry generally speaking all of these components are good. But it
is because of Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber/Bill Clay that makes this film the
classic it is. Because Bruce Willis as New York Police Detective John McLean;
needs someone of this caliber and stature and clarity to know what he is doing
and will go to any lengths to achieve his objective. So in essence what Alan
Rickman does is turn these safe and reliable character developments of Hans
Gruber/Bill Clay into an iconic character/role and in hindsight gives this film
franchise an excellent start; basically if this film failed we may not have
gotten this film franchise [yes this is purely based on would speculation;] but
then again that is how massive I believe this performance to be from Alan
Rickman; New York Police Detective McLean/Willis, Gruber/Clay/Rickman and LAPD
Sergeant Al Powell's/VelJohnson all have a very good relationship over the CB
radios handsets/walkie-talkie [including
LAPD Deputy Chief Dwayne T. Robinson/Gleason moment as well.]
This film receives: 10/10, this film is top-notch entertainment; this film is a classic and should be seen at least once in your lifetime [on a quick side note it has Won 8 Awards, Nominated for another 6 Awards including 4 Oscar Nominations.]
