20
years later: nutshell; these two Central High;
high school friends meet up days before their high school reunion. Calvin
Joyner/other names [Kevin Hart:] at Central High he was very popular and
all-rounder, including marrying his high school sweetheart Maggie Joyner
[Danielle Nicolet:] speculation on my part I'm going to give her the title of
successful business person, because unless I have missed something or we just
don't get told but whatever she is successful in her own office, but nowadays
Calvin is just an accountant. We now meet Bob Stone/other names/other
characters [Young stand in: Sione Kelepi/Adult: Dwayne Johnson:] at high school
he was far physically different from what he is in the present day, for him
high school was not a good experience. But Calvin is completely unaware that
Agent Stone is going to completely change their lives.
The framework and pacing of this 116 minutes film is
good, don't get me wrong does follow a very simple yet very effective yet
reliable yet timeless classic outlay of life changing experiences, richer for
the experience of this event and you can change things around and be
comfortable with the person you are that kind of thing [I will discuss this
last bit more later on.]
Character
developments and performances: as I
have just illustrated the character developments follow a very simple and in
short very effective outlay, generally speaking the cast performances are a
reflection of their character types which means this is good with good
chemistry. I am not being woke here, but I get the positive message about
making changes and being comfortable with who you are, but you are aware as of
2016 or/and 2023 and beyond, this is a silly notion. Because yes I can lose
some weight, I could improve myself but at the end of the day, I am still a
person with brain damage. I mean I have made some kind of peace with being
disabled, but it is the first thing anyone sees and because we are living in a
very superficial society I stick out like a sore thumb. I am not being a
cynical old goat, but for the sense of achievement and inner peace to somebody,
it is better to say "Try and change if you want to, do what you can change
and try to make peace with what you can't." So as you can see that kind of
attempt of cheesy positive messaging rubs me up the wrong way and for those
people now thinking or saying something to the effect of "Obviously this
message wasn't meant for you." To that I would say "Caution you are
now walking a very slim line between prejudiced and/or discrimination."
But now we come to some meat in this film, let's not kid
ourselves here the driving force behind this film is a partnership of Johnson
and Hart; so they chemistry is fluently there making everything run like
clockwork, this is one of those films where I can easily say without this
partnership this film would have just fallen flat on its face.
Action/Comedy: I will give you one lengthy sequence roughly; Calvin
and Agent Stone discussing things and at the same time Agent Stone is setting
up something, Calvin doesn't like what he hears so he blows their cover as
there are other CIA Agents, which are looking for them; Agent Stone has to
basically a spear [a running wrestling move,] out of the way of getting shot by
these Agent. So our partnership is now taking cover behind I believe these
cubical dividers, Agent Stone wants Kelvin to use his acting abilities that
picked up from high school; improv a hostage type of character which Kelvin
says no to it but in a lively situation Agent Stone just nicely yanks him up
and goes with it using him as a hostage and shooting his gun. Obviously Calvin
and every other civilian in this sequence is panicking, then our partnership
takes refuge behind this printer, our Agent pulls out the ink cartridge and
throws it up and towards these other Agents; Agent Stone is at the same time
following his gun at this ink cartridge to create this black mist. Calvin tries
to make a run for it, but Agent Stone scoops him what I think is a mail
trolley, where Calvin is obviously still screaming, to somewhat speed this up a
little eventually they get surrounded with Agent Pamela Harris [Amy Ryan:] she
is the leading Agent responsible for bringing this case to a close, a little
Agent to Agent back and forth, then off the back of that Calvin tries to get
himself out of this situation, it doesn't work. But unknown to her and everyone
else Agent Stone from earlier on had created a distraction which give it a
couple of more seconds and it will be ready to go off, Agent Stone briefly
informs by whispering Calvin with the most basic of details of if it works you
will have totally boss story, but he declined; this distraction goes off and
Agent Stone runs and pushes Calvin in this mail trolley through this window
which breaks and potentially falling to their death, but with a little bit of
luck they land on this inflatable advertising gorilla and then quickly make a
getaway.
This
film receives: 6/10, this film is good; it is a
solidly good film, which if you haven't seen it yet it is worth a watch
especially if you like Hart or/and Johnson separately or together, we also have
a blooper reel at the end of this film. This film also has awards accredited to
its name; 2 Winners Kids' Choice Awards, USA 2017 Blimip Award BFFs (Best
