Darkman 1990 by AverageMansReviews
Review Time
Warning: there are flashing effects/colourful
effects/disfigurement/decapitation/character on fire/shooting in the
head/medical component/character gets run over.
Storyline: and the pacing are on both counts good and solid; yes
we do have this origin storyline and we do get this question-mark ending style
of in a nutshell where is Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Neesson going and what is next
for him?; As he blends into this crowd; cosmetically under a different alias
[Bruce Campbell as Final Shemp] and quickly vanishes.
Characters/Art/Action/Comedy/Performances: including the on-screen chemistry all of these
components go hand-in-hand in one way or another at some point.
Now the Character [Character
development] of Dr. Westlake/Darkman is slightly similar but different to Dr.
Banner/Hulk, where Dr. Westlake/Darkman can't physically feel anything anymore
due to this medical procedure [if they didn't take away his sensations he would
be screaming in pain from his burns] so psychologically these emotions and chemicals
are starved so the only thing they have left are emotions, so they are
amplified when Dr. Westlake/Darkman gets angry everything comes to the front
which makes him incredibly strong and mentally unhinged, he can also go the
other way of sounding depressed about his situation I know Dr. Banner/Hulk can
get a bit down as well. But I mean at least Dr. Banner/Hulk; you really have to
do something to make them/him come out, I would have to give the better
self-discipline to Dr. Banner/Hulk, because I know Dr. Westlake/Darkman is new
into this lifestyle in this project, but in comparison he makes Dr. Banner/Hulk
look like a Yoga Instructor, these two individuals should try living together
and make it into a sitcom called "Don't make me Angry."
Now on Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Neesson
his patience reaching its boiling point most of the time we have this as I can
best describe as emotional Art to symbolize his thinking process and so we can
experience it simultaneously with him and also include things that are may or
may not be true or just in his head but they are real to him [on a quick side
note I have just realized this sounds like an excellent description of a mental
illness and yes I can say this because I have one.]
But I digress after Dr.
Westlake/Darkman/Neesson [cosmetically Dr. Westlake] believes he has fairly won
this big pink cuddly toy elephant for his girlfriend Hastings/McDormand; this
runner of this game disagrees on the grounds when he threw the ball and hit
these tin bottles over [in a triangle shape] his foot wasn't behind the line
[at the same time of throwing these balls; Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Neesson was
getting questions from his girlfriend and slowly more irritated.] During this
back-and-forth with this game runner he was already well on his way to losing
his cool; mentally showing signs of being disturbed for one example with a big
cuddly pink elephant turning its head and making an elephant sound, so things
are quickly escalating; when this Game Runner puts fingers on Dr.
Westlake/Darkman/Neesson's chest [for him to get the hint "If you and your
girlfriend don't go away there will be trouble."]
Well that was the final straw [in a
basic description] as mentally red cracks appear over this game stall [for Dr.
Westlake/Darkman/Neesson going through this metamorphosis into Darkman being
unleashed] internally we see this explosion inside Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Neesson
which we see the background resemble itself with the flames receding, as we go
back to reality. Action & Comedy Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Nilsson breaks this
Game Runner's two fingers with the camera rotating from this Game Runner
screaming in pain down the camera to Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Neesson giving this
angry roar to Hastings/McDormand looking at this situation and giving this
shocked yell. [For those that have seen this film; I know there is a little bit
more of this scene but I don't like
giving everything away and there is an adult word so I will just stop it where
I have stopped it.]
Performances including the on-screen chemistry; are all
good, for those that weren't around in the 1990's this is a good example of
what we used to see without as much computer technology as we have today in
these antihero/hero/other characters films where in this project it focuses on
the relationship between Dr. Westlake/Darkman/Neesson and Hastings/McDormand.
This film receives: 7/10, this film is good; maybe it is about time that this got a reboot with all the modern computer technology we have today, this could be potentially something special. But as this film is it does have some Awards to its name; the top one on the list of Winners; Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival 1990; Best Director; Sam Raimi [Tied with John McNaughton for Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer 1986] and the top one on the list of Nominations; 20/20 Awards; Felix Best Visual Effects.
